What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones have used since iOS 11. Built on the HEIF standard, it matches JPEG quality at roughly half the file size, but Windows, Android, and many web apps still can't open HEIC photos natively. Converting HEIC to PNG is the fix for sharing and editing, because PNG opens on every device and editor.
No upload, ever — private HEIC to PNG
SnapShrink converts HEIC to PNG entirely in your browser tab, so iPhone photos never leave your device.
Most “heic to png converter” sites upload files to a remote server. SnapShrink keeps every byte in your tab: the HEIC decoder (same ftyp-sniffing pipeline as HEIC to JPG) runs locally, PNG encode finishes in-browser, and DevTools shows zero image POSTs. That matters for client shoots, ID photos, and anything under NDA. iPhone photos use Apple’s HEIC flavor of the HEIF standard. Need a smaller sharing file instead? Use the sibling HEIC to JPG converter with the same no-upload engine.
How to convert HEIC to PNG online
Convert HEIC to PNG online in three steps inside SnapShrink. PNG output is pre-selected from this page.
- Open the SnapShrink tool with PNG selected.
- Drop one or more
.heic/.heiffiles; a HEIC badge marks them in the list. - Download PNGs individually or as a ZIP when the batch finishes.
Batch HEIC to PNG
Batch HEIC to PNG means you drop a whole folder’s worth of iPhone photos in one pass instead of converting file by file.
SnapShrink queues the batch locally, keeps the tab responsive, and lets you grab a ZIP when it finishes. The free tier covers the first 10 images per session; Pro is $9 one-time for unlimited images.
PNG vs JPG after HEIC — pick the right output
Choose PNG when you need lossless pixels, transparency, or editing headroom; choose JPG when you need a smaller file for sharing or forms.
| Prefer PNG when… | Prefer JPG when… |
|---|---|
| You’re editing further or need every pixel | You’re emailing or uploading to a size-capped form |
| You care about transparency or sharp UI crops | You want the smallest everyday photo file |
| Compatibility matters more than file weight | You already know JPG is accepted everywhere |
Most converters skip this size honesty: a typical 2MB HEIC often expands to roughly 15–25MB as PNG because PNG stores decoded pixels without HEIC’s aggressive compression. Convert for fidelity and editing room, not to shrink the file. If a form rejects large PNGs, switch to JPG on the same tool or open HEIC to JPG. See the W3C PNG specification and Apple’s image format documentation for why each format exists.
HEIC to PNG on Windows, Mac, and iPhone
You can convert HEIC to PNG on Windows 10/11, Mac, and after changing iPhone camera settings, without installing desktop software for the SnapShrink path.
HEIC to PNG on Windows 10 and Windows 11
HEIC to PNG on Windows 10 or 11 usually fails in Explorer until you install Microsoft’s HEIF Image Extensions (and sometimes HEVC Video Extensions).
That Store install is optional if you only need shareable PNGs. Open this heic to png free converter in Chrome or Edge, drop the .heic files, and download PNGs that open everywhere. No codec pack is required for the conversion itself.
Convert HEIC to PNG on Mac
Convert HEIC to PNG on Mac with Preview’s Export menu for one-off files, or use SnapShrink when you need a batch and a ZIP.
Preview is fine for a single photo. When you’ve AirDropped a dozen HEIC images from an iPhone, the browser batch path is faster, with the same no-upload promise and PNG pre-selected from this page.
Stop new iPhone photos from saving as HEIC
Change iPhone camera settings to Most Compatible if you want new photos saved as JPG instead of HEIC.
Path: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. That stops new HEIC at the source. Photos already on the device stay HEIC until you convert them here or export from Photos.
Honest limits for HEIC to PNG free use
HEIC to PNG free use covers the first 10 images per browser session; very large HEIC files can take longer to decode and will show a clear error instead of failing silently.
Large HEIC files tax browser memory. SnapShrink still runs locally. Give the tab time; if a file can’t decode you’ll see a clear skip message, not a silent hang. For TIFF scans use TIFF to PNG; for AVIF stills try AVIF to JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Can I batch convert HEIC to PNG?
Yes. Drop multiple .heic or .heif files, keep PNG selected, and download each file or a ZIP when the batch finishes. The first 10 images per browser session are free.
Why won't HEIC open on Windows 10 or 11?
Windows needs Apple's HEIF Image Extensions (or similar codecs) to preview HEIC natively. SnapShrink skips that install: convert HEIC to PNG in Chrome or Edge and open the PNG everywhere.
Can I convert HEIC to PNG on a Mac?
Yes. Preview can export HEIC to PNG one file at a time, or use SnapShrink in Safari or Chrome for batch HEIC to PNG with ZIP download, still no upload.
How do I stop my iPhone from saving HEIC?
On iPhone go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos save as JPG. Existing HEIC files still need a converter like this page.
Should I convert HEIC to PNG or JPG?
Choose PNG for lossless pixels, transparency, and editing. Choose JPG for smaller sharing files. A 2MB HEIC often becomes a much larger PNG; pick JPG when size matters more than lossless.
Will my PNG be larger than the HEIC?
Usually yes. HEIC is highly compressed; PNG stores pixels losslessly. Expect something like a 2MB HEIC to land around 15–25MB as PNG. Convert for compatibility, not to shrink the file.
